Lesson 7: Power and Energy: Watts, Watt-hours, and Electric Bills

Learn why watts measure the rate of energy transfer, why watt-hours measure total energy, and how kilowatt-hours become an electric bill.

Power and energy are related, but they are not the same thing.

power  = how fast energy is being transferred
energy = how much energy was transferred over time

A heater can use energy quickly. A small lamp can use energy slowly. The bill depends on the total energy transferred, not only the instant power number.

The simple model

Think of driving.

speed × time = distance
power × time = energy

Watts are like speed. They tell you the rate.

Watt-hours are like distance. They tell you the accumulated amount after the device runs for some time.

Watts are a rate

A watt measures power.

1 W = 1 J/s

That means one watt is one joule of energy transferred each second.

So a 1500 W heater is not using 1500 joules total. It is transferring energy at a rate of 1500 joules every second while it runs.

Watt-hours are energy

A watt-hour is power multiplied by time.

watts × hours = watt-hours

Because watts are joules per second, multiplying by time gives energy:

J/s × time = J

That is why watt-hours are energy units. They are not another kind of power. They are the total energy transferred over a duration.

Kilowatt-hours are bill-sized energy

Electric bills usually use kilowatt-hours, written as kWh.

1 kWh = 1000 Wh

The word kilo means 1000.

A device can reach 1 kWh in different ways:

1000 W × 1 h  = 1000 Wh = 1 kWh
100 W × 10 h  = 1000 Wh = 1 kWh
50 W × 20 h   = 1000 Wh = 1 kWh

Different rates and times can add up to the same total energy.

A bill example

Suppose a heater uses 1500 W for half an hour.

1500 W × 0.5 h = 750 Wh
750 Wh / 1000  = 0.75 kWh

If electricity costs $0.16 per kWh, then:

0.75 kWh × $0.16/kWh = $0.12

The bill chain is:

watts × hours = Wh
Wh / 1000 = kWh
kWh × price = cost

Common wording traps

Spell the units carefully:

  • joules, not jewels
  • watt-hours, not what hours

They sound similar in speech, but the written unit matters.

Bottom line

Watts measure how fast energy is being transferred. Watt-hours measure how much energy was transferred over time. Kilowatt-hours are the bill-friendly unit of total energy.

This is a simplified billing model. Real electric bills can also include fixed fees, taxes, delivery charges, time-of-use pricing, demand charges, or tiered rates. The core energy math still starts with power multiplied by time.
